We Czechs have, like every nation, a few pub songs that really everybody knows. Which is the most popular? Co jste hasiči / What Did You Firemen… But I don’t like this one very much, it’s rather too drunken. Another guess? What’s the second most popular Czech pub song? Na Pankráci, na malém vrrršíííčku / On the small hill on Pankrác… More about real life.
Every Czech accordionist simply has to have Na Pankráci on its repertoire, it’s an absolute must: the whole pub will love you then – and that’s worth it, isn’t it?
I’ve prepared an easy as well as a more complicated version, so that you won’t have any excuse.
Czech lyrics:
Na Pankráci na malém vršíčku,
stojí pěkné
stromořadí,
měl jsem holku namluvenou,
ale jiný mě za ní chodí.
Vy mládenci, kteří jste jako já,
nemilujte
doopravdy,
pomilujte, pošpásujte,
ale lásku jim
neslibujte.
Zdálo se mě
ze čtvrtka na pátek,
že jsem se svou
Andulkou spal…
Probudím se, obrátím se,
ale jak mě ten sen oklamal.
In English:
On the small hill on Pankrác there is
a beautiful alley
where I once liked to walk
I had a girl I was courting, but she left me
for another man.
All you young guys who are like me
don’t love the young girls
too earnestly,
enjoy the love, hugs and kisses,
but don’t promise them
fidelity.
On Thursday night, I dreamt
about sleeping with my
beloved sweet Annie girl…
Then I wake up
and turn around, and see
I‘d been deceived by my dreams.
